The veil has many hooks to deal with.

Week 5: The Deceptive Veil Hiding the Divine Essence

Day 3: Ancient Portraits Piercing Veils

Today’s Veil to Pierce

As we advance to Day 3 in this opening week of Month 2, extending from grace’s revelation of parental unity, we now turn to ancient portraits—scriptural and historical depictions that pierce the deceptive veil hiding the divine essence. These portraits, often veiled by time, interpretation, or cultural layers, illustrate the infinite source in vivid imagery, but the false self distorts them into distant artifacts rather than living invitations. This veil creates illusions of an archaic, irrelevant divinity, perpetuating separation from the timeless essence. In our shared contemplations, ancient portraits like the burning bush in Exodus 3 serve as grace’s tools, piercing veils to disclose the “I AM” as our own eternal ground, countering deceptions that relegate the divine to the past.

Grace’s Revelatory Power

Grace animates these ancient portraits, revealing their piercing power by bringing them alive in the present moment. It doesn’t confine them to history but uses them to expose the deceptive veil, showing the divine essence as ever-accessible. For instance, the pillar of fire guiding Israel (Exodus 13:21) becomes a symbol of grace’s illuminating path through illusions of darkness or lostness. This power is timeless and connective: grace bridges eras, dissolving distortions like dogmatic rigidity or skeptical dismissal, and awakening us to the portraits’ relevance. Through this, grace fosters continuity: the false self’s chronological separations dissolve, giving way to a living encounter where ancient wisdom pierces contemporary veils, unveiling the infinite source in vibrant, personal ways.

Contemplative Depth

To engage this depth, settle into a meditative immersion: select an ancient portrait, such as the Psalms’ shepherd imagery (Psalm 23), and hold it in awareness, observing the deceptive veil’s obscuring—perhaps through modern cynicism or literalism. Invite grace to pierce it: in the quiet, feel the portrait come alive, its essence resonating within your soul. As contemplation deepens, sense the unveiling: historical distance fades, the heart connects across time, and a profound timelessness emerges. This practice reveals layered connections: cultural biases surface and dissolve, emotions of detachment transform into reverence, and the soul attunes to the divine essence echoed in antiquity. Grace nurtures this with historical resonance, turning contemplation into a bridge across ages, where deceptive veils yield to the ancient portraits’ truth of eternal oneness, alive and piercing.

Applying the Insight

Incorporate ancient portraits daily: in challenges, draw on their wisdom for grace’s piercing, enriching modern life with timeless unity.
