The veil has many hooks to deal with.
M11:Week 2: Grace in the Embodied Life of the Body
Day 5: Grace in the Body’s Aging
Today’s Veil to Pierce
You have been taught that the real body is the one that can still keep its former pace.
That teaching is the veil of illusion at its most nostalgic.
The false self measures the community against an earlier version of itself. It whispers that slowing, frailty, and changing capacity are losses the shared life must somehow overcome or hide. This veil creates the illusion that the steadfast love holding the body prefers the people as they once were. In our shared contemplations, this distortion echoes communities that can speak of incarnation and still quietly sideline those whose bodies no longer match the energy of the room.
Grace does not require the body to remain young.
It meets the aging body as the same body still held.
Grace’s Revelatory Power
Grace in the body’s aging reveals that the eternal root of Charis — the steadfast, covenantal love of God — is not attached to a particular season of strength. This love does not grow thinner as capacity changes. Charis is this same love now visible when the body stops treating older members as a past version of the community and continues to receive them as present. This power is steady and unashamed: grace exposes the deceptive veil of “we were more ourselves when we could do more,” dissolving the illusion that the shared life peaks in its stronger years. Through this, grace restores continuity: the false self’s nostalgia fades, allowing the body to remain one people across changing strength.
Contemplative Depth
Take one place where age — yours or another’s — has been treated as a reduction.
Not to romanticize it. Just to look at the body as it is now.
Feel the veil tighten — the quiet comparison with earlier years, the subtle ranking of who still “counts,” the assumption that love was more real when the body was stronger. Then let grace do what it does best: nothing dramatic. Just a gentle turn of attention.
You do not need the former pace in order for the body to be fully the body.
You only need to notice that the steadfast love anchored before time is not diminished by age, and Charis is holding this season as fully as any other — right now, in this ordinary slowing.
Aging is not the fading of the body.
It is an invitation to stop resisting what is already true.
Applying the Insight
When comparison with an earlier strength arises and the old nostalgia begins, pause.
Ask yourself one quiet question:
“Am I measuring the body by a former season from fear, or resting in the love already given?”
Then breathe.
The answer usually changes everything.
Daily Reflection Prompt
Choose one place of aging in the body. Sit with it for five minutes without comparing it to an earlier capacity. Notice where the veil tightens. Then ask: What if the steadfast love is already fully present in this season as Charis? Write what arises.
