The veil has many hooks to deal with.
M4:Week 4: Veils Obscuring True Joy
Day 6: Grace Overcoming Joy-Stealers
Today’s Veil to Pierce
You have been taught that joy-stealers are external — circumstances, people, losses, failures.
That teaching is Maya at its most distracting.
The false self turns every joy-stealer into an enemy outside yourself, creating the illusion that if you could just remove the offending person, situation, or memory, joy would finally return. This veil keeps you fighting the wrong battle. In our reflections, this distortion echoes Martha’s frustration in Luke 10:40 — “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone?” — where the real joy-stealer was not Mary’s choice but Martha’s own attachment to her role.
Grace does not fight your joy-stealers.
It reveals that the real thief has always been inside.
Grace’s Revelatory Power
Grace overcomes joy-stealers by exposing them as internal attachments rather than external forces. It does not remove the circumstance or the person. It removes the illusion that your joy depends on them. As in the father’s command to celebrate while the older brother stood outside (Luke 15:28), grace does not force the joy-stealer to change. It simply opens the door to the feast and invites you to enter anyway. This power is precise and liberating: grace shines light on the hidden attachments — to being right, to comfort, to control, to being seen a certain way — and gently loosens their grip. What remains is not forced positivity but a deep, unshakable joy that cannot be stolen because it was never dependent on external conditions.
Contemplative Depth
Take one current joy-stealer — a person, situation, or memory — and hold it without trying to remove it. Observe Maya’s veil turning it into the enemy. Invite grace to reveal the real attachment: in deep stillness, feel the shift — the external threat softens, the inner grip becomes visible, and a profound freedom emerges. As depth builds, sense the overcoming: mental blame dissolves, the heart releases its demand, and unity infuses the space where the joy-stealer once stood. This practice uncovers layers: hidden expectations release, emotions of resentment evolve into compassion, and the soul discovers that the real joy-stealer was never the circumstance but the belief that joy could be taken. Grace guides this with quiet precision, turning contemplation into a sacred release, where Maya’s veils of external joy-stealers yield to grace’s truth of non-dual oneness, unstealable and ever-present.
Applying the Insight
When a joy-stealer appears, pause before the old blame story begins.
Ask yourself one quiet question:
“Am I protecting joy from fear, or resting in the Life already given?”
Then breathe.
The answer usually changes everything.
Daily Reflection Prompt
Choose one current joy-stealer. Sit with it for five minutes without trying to remove it. Notice where the veil tightens. Then ask: What if the eternal life revealed at Passover cannot be stolen by this? Write what arises.
