The veil has many hooks to deal with.
M7:Week 3: Grace as Chesed Made Visible
Day 4: Grace as Chesed Toward the Undeserving
Today’s Veil to Pierce
You have been taught that love should be reserved for the deserving.
That teaching is the veil of illusion at its most withholding.
The false self draws lines between those who have earned love and those who have not. It whispers that extending Chesed to the undeserving is unwise or unjust. This veil creates the illusion that love should be measured by worthiness. In our shared contemplations, this distortion echoes the older brother’s outrage when the prodigal received full restoration without earning it.
Grace does not love according to merit.
It enacts Chesed especially toward the undeserving.
Grace’s Revelatory Power
Grace as Chesed toward the undeserving reveals that the eternal steadfast love moves first toward those who have no claim on it. Chesed does not wait for worthiness — it creates it. Charis is this same love now flowing openly through you toward the ones the false self would exclude. This power is scandalous and transformative: grace exposes the deceptive veil of “they do not deserve it,” dissolving the illusion that love should be earned. Through this, grace restores compassion: the false self’s merit-based boundaries fade, allowing Chesed to flow freely as Charis through your life.
Contemplative Depth
Take one person or situation you consider undeserving of love or grace.
Not to force affection. Just to look at it.
Feel the veil tighten — the inner judgment, the calculation of what they deserve, the assumption that love should be withheld. Then let grace do what it does best: nothing dramatic. Just a gentle turn of attention.
You do not need to manufacture love for them.
You only need to notice that Chesed — the eternal steadfast love — moves toward the undeserving, and Charis is already inviting you to participate — right now, in this ordinary place.
Chesed toward the undeserving is not unfair.
It is an invitation to stop resisting what is already true.
Applying the Insight
When judgment or withholding arises toward someone you deem undeserving, pause.
Ask yourself one quiet question:
“Am I measuring worthiness from fear, or resting in the Chesed already given?”
Then breathe.
The answer usually changes everything.
Daily Reflection Prompt
Choose one person or situation you consider undeserving. Sit with it for five minutes without forcing change. Notice where the veil tightens. Then ask: What if Chesed is already moving toward this in Charis? Write what arises.
