Maya as Joy-Stealer Through Attachments

The veil has many hooks to deal with.

M4:Week 4: Veils Obscuring True Joy

Day 1: Maya as Joy-Stealer Through Attachments

Today’s Veil to Pierce

You have been taught that joy is something you must chase, earn, or protect.
That teaching is Maya at its most seductive.

The false self turns joy into a conditional prize — something that arrives only when circumstances line up, when you finally get it right, when the pain finally stops. It whispers that real joy is always just beyond the next achievement, the next relationship, the next season. This veil creates the illusion that joy is fragile and external, that it can be stolen by hardship or withheld by God. In our shared contemplations, this distortion echoes the older brother standing outside the feast (Luke 15:28), refusing to enter because his joy was tied to fairness and performance rather than the father’s already-prepared abundance.

Grace does not chase joy.
It reveals the joy that was never lost.

Grace’s Revelatory Power

Grace reveals joy as the natural atmosphere of your true nature — not a reward for getting life right, but the steady undercurrent that remains when Maya’s attachments are seen through. It does not manufacture happiness. It simply removes the veils that block what has always been there. As in the father’s command to celebrate (Luke 15:23), grace does not wait for perfect conditions. It declares the feast ready even while the prodigal is still filthy and the older brother is still angry.

This power is quiet and relentless: grace exposes the deceptive attachments — to outcomes, to comfort, to being right — and gently loosens their grip. What remains is not forced positivity but a deep, unshakable joy that does not depend on circumstances because it flows from the same Life that rose on Easter morning.

Contemplative Depth

Take one attachment that regularly steals your joy — a fear, an expectation, a need to be seen a certain way.
Not to fight it. Just to look at it.

Feel the veil tighten — the subtle contraction when that attachment is threatened, the quiet story that says “I cannot be fully joyful until…” Then let grace do what it does best: nothing dramatic. Just a gentle turn of attention.

You do not need to detach by force.
You only need to notice that the same Life that rolled away the stone is already freer than any attachment can touch.

The attachment is not the enemy.
It is the place where grace likes to remind you who you really are.

Applying the Insight

When joy feels distant, pause before the old attachment story begins.
Ask yourself one quiet question:
“Am I waiting for joy from fear, or resting in the Life already given?”

Then breathe.
The answer usually changes everything.

Daily Reflection Prompt

Choose one attachment that steals your joy. Sit with it for five minutes without trying to detach from it. Notice where the veil tightens. Then ask: What if the eternal life revealed at Passover is already freer than this? Write what arises.
