The veil has many hooks to deal with.

Day 3: Grace as Chesed in Hospitality
Today’s Veil to Pierce
You have been taught that hospitality should be offered only to those who are safe or similar.
That teaching is the veil of illusion at its most exclusive.
The false self draws careful boundaries around the table — who is welcome, who must earn their seat, who might disrupt the comfort. It whispers that true hospitality carries too much risk. This veil creates the illusion that love should protect its own space. In our shared contemplations, this distortion echoes the religious leaders who complained when Jesus ate with tax collectors and sinners.
Grace does not guard the table.
It opens it as Chesed in hospitality.
Grace’s Revelatory Power
Grace as Chesed in hospitality reveals that the eternal steadfast love makes room for the outsider, the stranger, and the undeserving. Chesed does not require credentials before welcoming. Charis is this same love now visible in the way you open your life and resources to others. This power is generous and courageous: grace exposes the deceptive veil of “they must earn their place,” dissolving the illusion that hospitality should be selective. Through this, grace restores open tables: the false self’s protective boundaries fade, allowing Chesed to flow as Charis in your daily welcome.
Contemplative Depth
Take one moment where you felt the pull to close the door rather than open it.
Not to force openness. Just to look at it.
Feel the veil tighten — the fear of risk, the calculation of comfort, the assumption that some people do not belong at your table. Then let grace do what it does best: nothing dramatic. Just a gentle turn of attention.
You do not need to welcome everyone perfectly.
You only need to notice that Chesed — the eternal steadfast love — has always made room for you, and Charis is inviting you to do the same — right now, in this ordinary opportunity.
Chesed in hospitality is not reckless.
It is an invitation to stop resisting what is already true.
Applying the Insight
When the opportunity to show hospitality arises and the old protectiveness returns, pause.
Ask yourself one quiet question:
“Am I guarding my table from fear, or resting in the Chesed already given?”
Then breathe.
The answer usually changes everything.
Daily Reflection Prompt
Choose one opportunity for hospitality stirring in you. Sit with it for five minutes without forcing action. Notice where the veil tightens. Then ask: What if Chesed is already inviting me to open the table in Charis? Write what arises.
If these truths are stirring something deep in you, explore them further in my book “Chesed & Charis: Two Sides of the Same Coin,” available here.
