The veil has many hooks to deal with.

Day 4: Grace as Chesed in Bearing Burdens
Today’s Veil to Pierce
You have been taught that each person should carry their own load.
That teaching is the veil of illusion at its most individualistic.
The false self draws firm lines around personal responsibility — “their problem, not mine.” It whispers that helping bear another’s burden will drain you or enable them. This veil creates the illusion that love stops at self-care. In our shared contemplations, this distortion echoes the priest and Levite who passed by the wounded man on the road to Jericho.
Grace does not love from a safe distance.
It enacts Chesed by bearing burdens with others.
Grace’s Revelatory Power
Grace as Chesed in bearing burdens reveals that the eternal steadfast love willingly carries what others cannot carry alone. Chesed moves toward vulnerability and shares the weight. Charis is this same love now visible when you come alongside those who are struggling. This power is compassionate and sustaining: grace exposes the deceptive veil of “this is not my burden,” dissolving the illusion that love should remain separate. Through this, grace restores communal strength: the false self’s self-protective boundaries fade, allowing Chesed to flow as Charis when you help carry what another cannot bear alone.
Contemplative Depth
Take one person whose burden you have noticed but hesitated to help carry.
Not to solve their problem. Just to look at it.
Feel the veil tighten — the fear of being drained, the thought that it is not your responsibility, the assumption that they should handle it alone. Then let grace do what it does best: nothing dramatic. Just a gentle turn of attention.
You do not need to carry everything for them.
You only need to notice that Chesed — the eternal steadfast love — willingly shares burdens, and Charis is inviting you to participate — right now, in this small way.
Chesed in bearing burdens is not enabling.
It is an invitation to stop resisting what is already true.
Applying the Insight
When someone’s burden appears and the old self-protection rises, pause.
Ask yourself one quiet question:
“Am I withdrawing from this burden from fear, or resting in the Chesed already given?”
Then breathe.
The answer usually changes everything.
Daily Reflection Prompt
Choose one person whose burden has come to your attention. Sit with it for five minutes without forcing a solution. Notice where the veil tightens. Then ask: What if Chesed is inviting me to help bear this in Charis? Write what arises.
If these truths are stirring something deep in you, explore them further in my book “Chesed & Charis: Two Sides of the Same Coin,” available here.
