The veil has many hooks to deal with.
M9:Week 1: Grace in the Shared Life of the Body
Day 3: Grace in Shared Vulnerability
Today’s Veil to Pierce
You have been taught that vulnerability in the body is optional and often unsafe.
That teaching is the veil of illusion at its most guarded.
The false self keeps a careful distance, offering only curated strength while privately carrying struggle. It whispers that real belonging requires the appearance of competence. This veil creates the illusion that the shared life is strengthened by hiddenness rather than by honesty. In our shared contemplations, this distortion echoes every community that praises authenticity in theory while quietly rewarding those who never need help.
Grace does not protect the body from vulnerability.
It meets us in shared vulnerability as the place where steadfast love becomes visible.
Grace’s Revelatory Power
Grace in shared vulnerability reveals that the eternal root of Charis — the steadfast, covenantal love of God — does not wait for us to become strong before it draws near. This love moves toward the places of need, weakness, and unfinishedness. Charis is this same love now visible when the body stops hiding and begins to carry one another’s real lives. This power is healing and connective: grace exposes the deceptive veil of “vulnerability is unsafe,” dissolving the illusion that the shared life is stronger when people stay polished. Through this, grace restores true community: the false self’s protective distance fades, allowing shared vulnerability to become the ordinary ground of belonging.
Contemplative Depth
Take one place of vulnerability you have been carrying alone — or one you have noticed in someone else.
Not to force disclosure. Just to look at it.
Feel the veil tighten — the quiet fear of being seen as weak, the subtle preference for competence, the assumption that the body cannot handle the real weight. Then let grace do what it does best: nothing dramatic. Just a gentle turn of attention.
You do not need to stay hidden for the shared life to remain intact.
You only need to notice that the steadfast love anchored before time is already present in the vulnerability, and Charis is inviting the body to meet there — right now, in this ordinary place of need.
Shared vulnerability is not weakness.
It is an invitation to stop resisting what is already true.
Applying the Insight
When the impulse to hide or to keep others at a polished distance arises, pause.
Ask yourself one quiet question:
“Am I protecting the appearance of strength from fear, or resting in the love already given?”
Then breathe.
The answer usually changes everything.
Daily Reflection Prompt
Choose one place of vulnerability (yours or another’s). Sit with it for five minutes without forcing disclosure. Notice where the veil tightens. Then ask: What if shared vulnerability is already the place where love is meeting us as Charis? Write what arises.
