Grace Making the Body Visible

The veil has many hooks to deal with.

M9:Week 2: Grace in the Visible Life of the Body

Day 1: Grace Making the Body Visible

Today’s Veil to Pierce

You have been taught that the life of the body is primarily an internal matter for those already inside.
That teaching is the veil of illusion at its most private.

The false self treats the shared life as something that happens behind closed doors — meaningful for members, but not particularly relevant to the watching world. It whispers that visibility is secondary or even risky. This veil creates the illusion that the steadfast love that holds the body is meant to remain mostly hidden. In our shared contemplations, this distortion echoes Jesus’ words that a city on a hill cannot be hidden and that the light is not meant to be put under a basket.

Grace does not keep the life of the body private.
It makes the body visible as the natural expression of the love that holds it.

Grace’s Revelatory Power

Grace making the body visible reveals that the eternal root of Charis — the steadfast, covenantal love of God — is not content to remain internal. This love is meant to be seen. Charis is this same love now becoming observable in how the body lives together — in its welcome, its loyalty, its shared vulnerability, its shared joy, and its shared suffering. This power is public and invitational: grace exposes the deceptive veil of “our life together is mostly private,” dissolving the illusion that the shared life is only for those already inside. Through this, grace restores true witness: the false self’s preference for hiddenness fades, allowing the body to become a visible demonstration of the love that has always held it.

Contemplative Depth

Take one ordinary expression of the shared life that has remained mostly internal.
Not to force publicity. Just to look at it.

Feel the veil tighten — the quiet preference for privacy, the subtle fear of being watched, the assumption that the life of the body is not meant for outside eyes. Then let grace do what it does best: nothing dramatic. Just a gentle turn of attention.

You do not need to perform visibility.
You only need to notice that the steadfast love anchored before time is already making the body visible, and Charis is inviting that visibility — right now, in this ordinary shared life.

Visibility is not performance.
It is an invitation to stop resisting what is already true.

Applying the Insight

When the impulse to keep the shared life private arises and the old caution begins, pause.
Ask yourself one quiet question:
“Am I hiding the life of the body from fear, or resting in the love already given?”

Then breathe.
The answer usually changes everything.

Daily Reflection Prompt

Choose one ordinary expression of the shared life. Sit with it for five minutes without forcing visibility. Notice where the veil tightens. Then ask: What if the steadfast love is already making the body visible here as Charis? Write what arises.
