The veil has many hooks to deal with.
M10:Week 1: Grace in the Lamenting Life of the Body
Day 2: Grace When the Body Cannot Explain the Pain
Today’s Veil to Pierce
You have been taught that suffering becomes bearable only when it can be explained.
That teaching is the veil of illusion at its most controlling.
The false self rushes toward meaning — a lesson, a purpose, a reason that would make the wound useful. It whispers that unexplained pain is spiritually unfinished and therefore unsafe to carry in public. This veil creates the illusion that the steadfast love that holds the body must first interpret the sorrow before it can stay. In our shared contemplations, this distortion echoes those who could endure hardship only after they had assigned it a tidy cause.
Grace does not require the body to explain the pain.
It holds unexplained suffering as the place where love remains without a theory.
Grace’s Revelatory Power
Grace when the body cannot explain the pain reveals that the eternal root of Charis — the steadfast, covenantal love of God — does not wait for interpretation. This love is present before meaning arrives. Charis is this same love now visible when the body refuses to force a lesson onto what still hurts. This power is patient and non-anxious: grace exposes the deceptive veil of “pain must become useful,” dissolving the illusion that unexplained sorrow is a threat to faith. Through this, grace restores true companionship: the false self’s demand for explanation fades, allowing the body to stay with the wound without dressing it in premature purpose.
Contemplative Depth
Take one pain that still has no satisfying reason.
Not to find the lesson. Just to look at the absence of explanation.
Feel the veil tighten — the urge to make it mean something, the discomfort of unanswered why, the assumption that love recedes where interpretation fails. Then let grace do what it does best: nothing dramatic. Just a gentle turn of attention.
You do not need the pain to become useful before it can be held.
You only need to notice that the steadfast love anchored before time is already present in the unexplained place, and Charis is keeping the body company there — right now, without a theory.
Unexplained pain is not unfinished faith.
It is an invitation to stop resisting what is already true.
Applying the Insight
When the rush to explain a wound arises and the old need for purpose begins, pause.
Ask yourself one quiet question:
“Am I forcing meaning from fear, or resting in the love already given?”
Then breathe.
The answer usually changes everything.
Daily Reflection Prompt
Choose one pain that still has no satisfying reason. Sit with it for five minutes without assigning a lesson. Notice where the veil tightens. Then ask: What if the steadfast love is already holding this unexplained place as Charis? Write what arises.
