The veil has many hooks to deal with.
M5:Week 1: Grace Empowering Holiness
Day 6: Avoiding Legalistic Holiness
Today’s Veil to Pierce
You have been taught that holiness looks like a list — rules, boundaries, behaviors, and standards you must maintain.
That teaching is Maya wearing a holy mask.
The false self turns holiness into another system of control, where the more rules you keep, the more spiritual you become. It whispers that grace gets you started but legalism keeps you safe. This veil creates the illusion that holiness is a narrow path of restriction rather than the wide-open freedom of the Life revealed at Passover. In our reflections, this distortion echoes the older brother’s complaint (Luke 15:29) — “I have served you all these years and never disobeyed your command” — as if perfect rule-keeping was the ticket to the feast.
Grace does not make you holy by giving you better rules.
It makes you holy by showing you that you were never unholy.
Grace’s Revelatory Power
Grace frees you from legalistic holiness by revealing it as another form of the same illusion Maya has been selling all along. It does not replace old rules with new ones. It dissolves the need for the game entirely. This power is liberating and humbling: grace exposes the deceptive veil of “if I just follow these rules perfectly,” dissolving the illusion that holiness can be achieved through behavior management. Through this, grace restores joy: the false self’s legalistic distortions fade, allowing holiness to become the natural expression of the oneness already awakened in you.
Contemplative Depth
Take one area where legalistic holiness has weighed on you — a rule, a standard, a “should.”
Not to rebel against it. Just to look at it.
Feel the veil tighten — the subtle pressure to perform, the quiet fear that breaking it proves something bad about you. Then let grace do what it does best: nothing dramatic. Just a gentle turn of attention.
You do not need to fight the rules.
You only need to notice that the same Life that rolled away the stone is already holy in you — right now, beyond every rule.
Legalistic holiness is not a test.
It is an invitation to stop resisting what is already true.
Applying the Insight
When the old pressure of legalistic “shoulds” arises, pause.
Ask yourself one quiet question:
“Am I striving from fear, or resting in the Life already given?”
Then breathe.
The answer usually changes everything.
Daily Reflection Prompt
Choose one area where legalistic holiness has weighed on you. Sit with it for five minutes without trying to obey or rebel. Notice where the veil tightens. Then ask: What if the eternal life revealed at Passover is already holy here? Write what arises.
