The veil has many hooks to deal with.
M5:Week 1: Grace Empowering Holiness
Day 7: Joy in Sanctified Living
Today’s Veil to Pierce
As we conclude Week 17, we now look at the joy in sanctified living — the deceptive veil that turns holiness into a heavy burden rather than a light-filled expression. The false self whispers that a holy life must be serious, restrictive, and joyless — a constant fight against the world. This veil creates the illusion that the eternal life unveiled at Passover is beautiful but somehow incompatible with delight. In our reflections, this distortion echoes the older brother standing outside the music and dancing (Luke 15:28), refusing to enter the feast because his version of holiness left no room for joy.
Grace does not make holiness joyless.
It makes holiness joyful.
Grace’s Revelatory Power
Grace reveals joy as the natural atmosphere of a sanctified life, showing that the same Life that rose on Easter morning is still rising in the ordinary, holy moments of your days. It does not demand somber duty. It invites celebration. This power is light and liberating: grace exposes the deceptive veil of “holy = heavy,” dissolving the illusion that sanctification must be grim. Through this, grace restores delight: the false self’s burdensome distortions fade, allowing the soul to live holiness as the joyful expression of the oneness already awakened in you.
Contemplative Depth
Take one area where holiness has felt heavy or joyless.
Not to fix it. Just to look at it.
Feel the veil tighten — the subtle pressure to be serious, the quiet assumption that real holiness cannot include delight. Then let grace do what it does best: nothing dramatic. Just a gentle turn of attention.
You do not need to manufacture joy in your holiness.
You only need to notice that the same Life that rolled away the stone is still alive in you — right now, in this ordinary place of trying to be holy.
Holiness is not a burden.
It is an invitation to stop resisting what is already true.
Applying the Insight
When holiness feels heavy and the old story begins (“this should be more serious”), pause.
Ask yourself one quiet question:
“Am I striving from fear, or resting in the Life already given?”
Then breathe.
The answer usually changes everything.
Daily Reflection Prompt
Choose one area where holiness has felt heavy. Sit with it for five minutes without trying to make it more serious. Notice where the veil tightens. Then ask: What if the eternal life revealed at Passover is already joyful here? Write what arises.
