The veil has many hooks to deal with.
M5:Week 3: Grace Sustaining Through Trials
Day 6: Grace When Others Suffer
Today’s Veil to Pierce
You have been taught that watching someone you love suffer is a test of your own faith.
That teaching is the veil of illusion we have called Maya at its most helpless.
The false self turns another person’s pain into your failure — proof that your prayers are not strong enough, that you should be able to fix it, or that God is not listening to either of you. It whispers that loving well means removing their suffering. This veil creates the illusion that their pain is somehow your responsibility to solve. In our reflections, this distortion echoes Mary and Martha watching Lazarus die while Jesus delayed — the ache of “if you had been here…”
Grace does not make you responsible for their healing.
It makes you present in their pain.
Grace’s Revelatory Power
Grace holds us when others suffer by revealing the shared Life that connects every heart. You do not have to carry their burden alone. The same Life that rose on Easter morning is already moving in them — even when you cannot see it. This power is compassionate and freeing: grace exposes the deceptive veil of “I should be able to stop their pain,” dissolving the illusion that love equals control. Through this, grace restores connection: the false self’s frantic fixing fades, allowing you to simply be with them in the Love that already holds both of you.
Contemplative Depth
Take one person you love who is suffering.
Not to solve their problem. Just to look at them.
Feel the veil tighten — the urge to fix, the guilt that you cannot, the fear that your presence is not enough. Then let grace do what it does best: nothing dramatic. Just a gentle turn of attention.
You do not need to remove their suffering to love them well.
You only need to notice that the same Life that rolled away the stone is already with both of you — right now, in this shared ache.
Their suffering does not separate you from grace.
It is an invitation to stop resisting what is already true.
Applying the Insight
When someone you love suffers and the old helplessness rises, pause.
Ask yourself one quiet question:
“Am I trying to rescue them from fear, or resting in the Life already given?”
Then breathe.
The answer usually changes everything.
Daily Reflection Prompt
Choose one person you love who is suffering. Sit with them in your mind for five minutes without trying to fix anything. Notice where the veil tightens. Then ask: What if the eternal pattern of Passover is already holding both of us? Write what arises.
